Go calls for vigilance against mpox
SEN. Bong Go renewed his call for vigilance following the confirmation of two monkeypox (mpox) cases in Soccksargen or Region 12.
Go on Sunday said mpox cases have already been reported in Metro Manila, Calabarzon (Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon), Central Luzon, Baguio City and Davao City.
He said the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) of South Cotabato has confirmed its first case of mpox involving a resident from Lake Sebu.
The patient tested positive for the milder Clade 2 variant but was in stable condition and under close monitoring by local health authorities.
The IPHO of North Cotabato earlier confirmed a case involving a 30-year-old male from Tulunan town, who also was positive for the Clade 2 variant and was being isolated.
Go urged the public to remain cautious.
He said that "long-term preparedness is necessary to protect Filipinos from recurring outbreaks of various diseases," including passing laws to address such concerns.
He cited Senate Bill (SB) 195, which he filed to establish the Philippine Center for Disease Control (CDC — an independent body tasked with surveillance, prevention and rapid response to infectious diseases.
"If the country has its own CDC, we will no longer be dependent from other [countries]. We will be able to act fast; our response will be more organized," Go said in Filipino.
