Duterte son and lawmaker probed for bar altercation

(UPDATE) DAVAO City's 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte, eldest son of former president Rodrigo Duterte, is under investigation for allegedly assaulting and threatening a businessman during an argument at a popular Davao City bar in February.

A complaint against Duterte was filed by Kristone John Patria and received by the National Prosecution Service of the Department of Justice (DOJ) on May 2.

The 37-year-old Patria alleged that at around 3 a.m. on Feb. 25, Duterte physically attacked him and threatened during an altercation inside the Hearsay Gastropub Bar in Barangay Obrero, Davao City.

Patria, a businessman and resident of Panacan, Davao City, filed a sworn affidavit, together with witness statements and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, which are now in the custody of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region Field Unit National Capital Region.

Investigators also included documents, scene photographs and a business card from the bar's manager, Jake Mikael Duallo, as part of their referral to prosecutors.

In his affidavit, Patria said the assault stemmed from an argument involving payments to women who took part in a private party earlier that night.

Patria admitted to supplying women to events hosted by Duterte and longtime associate Charlie Tan.

The evening began with heavy drinking at Tan's residence in Woodridge, Maa, where Duterte, Patria and several women were reportedly present.

The group later moved to Hearsay Gastropub, where tensions escalated after one of the women, who was not chosen to leave with any of the men, confronted Patria.

The woman claimed she had only been paid P1,000 — far below the P13,000 she had been promised.

Upon hearing the complaint, Duterte allegedly flew into a rage, blaming Patria for the oversight.

Patria said he was headbutted, punched, kicked and stabbed in the side by Duterte while being subjected to death threats. "He told me, 'I'll kill you,' while attacking me. He looked completely consumed by rage," Patria said.

The businessman alleged that Duterte's bodyguards blocked the exits and locked the doors of the bar at the congressman's orders. He also said Duterte instructed his men to disable the CCTV system — but not before parts of the attack were recorded.

Patria said Duterte handed him P1,000 for every blow he delivered, mocking the woman's underpayment claim.

The ordeal allegedly lasted nearly two hours before Duterte left the bar, warning Patria to cover the full payment to avoid further consequences.

Fearing retaliation, Patria said he initially avoided going to the hospital to have his injuries treated.

Despite the risks, Patria said he is now prepared to testify and cooperate fully with any investigation.

He urged authorities to get hold of the bar's CCTV recordings, which he believes contain critical footage of the assault.

The Philippine National Police's CIDG endorsed the case to the DOJ for preliminary investigation.

The complaint was certified by State Prosecutor Premolito Plaza, with CIDG officials stressing that the case has not yet proceeded to a formal inquest or preliminary investigation hearing.

A senior official familiar with the CIDG process told The Manila Times on condition of anonymity that the involvement of a high-ranking public official like Duterte may require "elevated prosecutorial oversight."

Patria has declined media interviews but confirmed the filing of the complaint through his lawyer.

In a brief statement sent to reporters, the lawyer said: "No citizen, regardless of the power or surname of his aggressor, should fear for his safety in a public establishment. We seek due process — nothing more, nothing less."

Duterte has not released an official statement as of press time.
