Compton man arrested in Long Beach killing
LONG BEACH — A 24-year-old Compton man was in custody Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in Long Beach, authorities said.
Malik Cooper was arrested Monday during a traffic stop in Compton following the execution of a search warrant, according to the Long Beach Police Department. He was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held on $2 million bail, police said.
Officers responded around 3:50 a.m. on March 17 to the 5400 block of Atlantic Avenue following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon.
Police said Alejandro Calderon, 52, of Hawthorne was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body and was taken to a hospital by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, where he later died.
The motive behind the fatal shooting remained unknown, as detectives continued their investigation Tuesday.
Police said detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for formal filing consideration.
