In his native England, he is best known as a co-creator and star of the BBC Two comedy, “The Office,” which was adapted into the American version that ran from 2005 to 2013 on NBC.
“This is pretty crazy and humbling,” Gervais told the crowd as he accepted the honor. “… I have a strange mix of ‘nothing good ever happens’ and ‘if it does, I don’t deserve it, or I can’t be as good as I thought I was.’ I’m also not very good at taking things too seriously, that’s sort of my job. … I’m going to try to be serious for a minute. Thank you so much for this honor. It’s a genuine thrill to be part of such an exclusive club.

“… Thank you to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for this. Genuinely, it is an extraordinary honor. I am humbled to have my name etched on this legendary Walk of Fame, a place that celebrates the dreamers and doers of the industry. I would love to claim it was due to my unrivaled genius, but if truth be told, it’s a cocktail of luck, assistance and a little bit of pushing against the tide.”
Actor Christopher Guest and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos joined Gervais in speaking at the ceremony at 1628 Vine St., about a half-block north of the famed intersection of Hollywood and Vine.
Gervais and Guest were castmates in the films “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” “The Invention of Lying,” which Gervais co-wrote and co-directed, and “For Your Consideration,” which Guest directed and co-wrote.
Gervais starred in the Netflix specials “Ricky Gervais: Humanity,” “Ricky Gervais: Supernature,” “Ricky Gervais: Armageddon” and “Ricky Gervais: Mortality” and the streaming service’s 2019-22 British black comedy drama, “After Life,” which he also created, produced and directed.
Gervais’ other television credits include the 2005-07 BBC and HBO series “Extras” and the 2012-14 Netflix and Channel 4 comedy-drama “Derek.”
The star is the 2,813rd since the completion of the Walk of Fame in 1961 with the initial 1,558 stars.
The ceremony came one day before Gervais performs at the Hollywood Bowl as part of his “Ricky Gervais: Mortality” tour. In a statement before the start of the tour Gervais said, “We’re all gonna die. May as well have a laugh about it. Mortality looks at the absurdities of life. And death. Bring it on.”
