Big Bear bald eagle Sunny takes first flight
Balanced on a Jeffrey pine branch high above Big Bear Lake, the young eagle stretched took a few careful steps to test her balance, spread her wings and leapt — soaring away from the nest she’s called home since early March.
At 10:46 a.m. Monday, June 2, Sunny, one of the two eaglets that have captivated hundreds of thousands of fans across the world in recent months, fledged, leaving her sister, Gizmo, behind, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley.
The nonprofit operates a pair of web cams that livestream the Big Bear-area nest. In recent days, Sunny had been showing signs she was ready to leave the nest and explore the world around her.
