After Hearsay video, Duterte asks voters: decide my fate
DAVAO City 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte asked voters over the weekend if they would still consider voting him into Congress, after a video was released on social media showing him punching and headbutting a businessman at a bar in February.
The closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage was part of the evidence submitted by Davao businessman Kristone John Patria, who alleged that on Feb. 25, 3 a.m., Duterte physically attacked him and threatened him during an altercation inside the Hearsay Gastropub Bar in Barangay Obrero, Davao City.
Patria, a businessman and resident of Panacan, Davao City, filed a sworn affidavit, together with witness statements and CCTV footage, which are now in the custody of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Region Field Unit National Capital Region.
Investigators also included documents, scene photographs and a business card from the bar's manager, Jake Mikael Duallo, as part of their referral to prosecutors.
In his affidavit, Patria said the assault stemmed from an argument involving payments to women who took part in a private party earlier that night.
Patria admitted to supplying women to events hosted by Duterte and longtime associate Charlie Tan.
The evening began with heavy drinking at Tan's residence in Woodridge, Maa, where Duterte, Patria and several women were reportedly present.
The group later moved to Hearsay Gastropub, where tensions escalated after one of the women, who was not chosen to leave with any of the men, confronted Patria.
The woman claimed she had only been paid P1,000 — far below the P13,000 she had been promised.
Upon hearing the complaint, Duterte allegedly flew into a rage, blaming Patria for the oversight.
Patria said he was headbutted, punched, kicked and stabbed in the side by Duterte while being subjected to death threats. "He told me, 'I'll kill you,' while attacking me. He looked completely consumed by rage," Patria said.
The businessman alleged that Duterte's bodyguards blocked the exits and locked the doors of the bar at the congressman's orders. He also said Duterte instructed his men to disable the CCTV system — but not before parts of the attack were recorded.
During a meet and greet with the members of the Filipino community in The Hague in the Netherlands, Duterte acknowledged the presence of the video and noted that it happened a while ago and called for his constituents in the first district of Davao to decide if they would vote him back into office.
Duterte is in The Hague to visit his father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is facing trial before the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity over the thousands of suspects killed in his bloody war on drugs.
"I am not going to force it, and I was told by the lawyer because until now they are yet to authenticate where the video came from," Duterte said in Bisaya.
Duterte also said that he will not comment on the merits of the case as they have not yet received the charge document, but he noted that the case was already filed by the Philippine National Police-CIDG to the Department of Justice.
In a subsequent interview, Duterte told the Filipino community in the area that the case was "planted," citing a post by the legal counsel of jailed pastor Apollo Quiboloy, Israelito Torreon.
"If you do not lose through aid, you will lose through cases. That's the new politics in the Philippines, I'm already used to it," Duterte said.
Duterte, however, did not directly address whether he would pursue countercharges against Patria.
In the House race, Duterte faces Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta Rep. Margarita Ignacia Nograles.
