Hundreds of juvenile goldstripe sardinella with scientific name of Sardinella gibbossa and also known as mangsi were spotted in Cebu.

According to Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Tuesday, in the video of Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin N. Garcia the school of fish are shown in a unified movement above water.

The local government of Cebu said the phenomenon is due to regular coastal clean up efforts in the area.

“Ang main reason kung bakit sila tumatalon sa tubig ay malamang, nabulabog sila. It could be because merong predator doon sa likod nilang ready na kumagat,” environmentalist Gregg Yan said.

This fish is a kind of sardine, which is abundant in our oceans.

“Meron tayong nine recorded species, ang six of them are commercially valuable,” he said.

“They form a part of the food pyramid. Sila ay ang kinakain ng maraming ibang klaseng hayop tulad ng mga ibon, dolphins, mackerel, tuna, at siyempre mga gutom na Pinoy,” the environmentalist continued. — Carby Basina/BAP, GMA Integrated News
