Western Visayas has recorded more than 1,800 cases of dengue this year so far, according to the Department of Health (DOH) Western Visayas Center for Health Development – Dengue and Malaria Program.

A total of 1,830 dengue cases were reported in the region from January 1 to March 23, according to a report on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita on Wednesday. The DOH said this is 5% higher compared to the 1,742 cases recorded during the same period last year.

“There is an Increased Attack Rate of Dengue (2023 vs. 2024) in the Provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Guimaras, and Iloilo City,” the DOH said.

“Twenty-six barangays in Western Visayas have clustering of dengue cases,” it added.

The DOH said 229 new dengue cases were reported from March 17 to 23. Most of these cases were recorded in Iloilo with 78 cases, Negros Occidental with 36, and Capiz with 32.

No new fatalities due to dengue were reported as the death toll remained at three as of March 23, according to the DOH.

Dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus which could be transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Symptoms of dengue include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rashes.

On March 1, the DOH said the number of dengue cases nationwide has decreased.

Based on DOH data as of February 23, 5,267 dengue cases have been recorded from January 28 to February 10, lower than the 7,434 cases recorded from January 14 to January 27.

“The DOH encourages all to strengthen implementation of the 5S strategy against dengue: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, use Self-protection measures, Seek early consultation, Say yes to fogging where needed, and Start and sustain hydration,” the DOH said. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
